Parents can register kindergarten pupils until first of April

By Donnie Fetter
News Editor

Kindergarten registration is under way in Columbia County elementary schools.

Registration continues between 9:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. weekdays until April 1. Only children who are 5 years old by Sept. 1 are eligible for kindergarten registration.

Kindergartners need to be registered at the school in which they are zoned. To check the zoning, visit the school system's Web site, www.ccboe.net, and open the "Find Your Bus Stop" link.

Those in the new Baker Place Elementary School zone can register at Lewiston, Cedar Ridge or Euchee Creek elementary schools. Those schools will transfer the records to the new school once it opens in August.

During registration, school officials will require a certified original of the pupil's birth certificate; a state Certificate of Immunization; a state Certificate of Eye, Ear and Dental Examination from within a year of the registration date; and proof of residency, such as a current gas or electric bill showing a name and address.

The needed health documents can be obtained from a private physician, Fort Gordon medical personnel or the county Health Department.

Pupils in first through fifth grades who are new to the Columbia County school system also should register now. Those pupils will need proof of residency and their most recent report cards to register.

Parents are encouraged to bring the enrolling pupils' Social Security cards to registration.

For information, call the school in which the child is zoned or call the central office at (706) 541-0650.
